Clinical Pastoral Education Program (CPE)
Clinical Pastoral Education
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is interfaith professional education for ministry. Our objective is to prepare ministers, theological students, and lay persons from a variety of cultural backgrounds to provide pastoral care to patients, families and staff using an action-reflection model of adult learning.
Students have the opportunity to engage in professional and spiritual formation for the purpose of developing pastoral competencies and skills. The historic and profound Alexian and Ascension traditions provide the contexts for this formation and learning. Students can expect to minister with seasoned pastoral providers and learn in a variety of interdisciplinary settings.
Our CPE Mission
Ascension Living Alexian Village of Milwaukee’s Clinical Pastoral Education program is a satellite program of the AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Clinical Pastoral Education program. These programs promote a collaborative and diverse learning culture, where students and staff practice the art of reflective ministry and engage in adult learning models that deepen pastoral identity and functioning for the purpose of:
- Serving the spiritual and emotional needs of our patients, families, and staff
- Preparing competent, prophetic, and theologically capable pastoral leaders
- Promoting wellness and healing in the communities that we serve.
The Ascension/ AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Clinical Pastoral Education Program is accredited (Level I, Level II, Certified Educator training ) with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc., (ACPE), One West Court Square, Decatur GA 30033. 404 320-1472. firstname.lastname@example.org
CPE at Alexian Village
Why is CPE unique at Ascension Living Alexian Village of Milwaukee?
The values represented by the legacy traditions within Alexian and Ascension provide an enriched context for learning the arts and skills of spiritual care. As Alexian and Ascension have expanded both locally and nationally, their commitment to the body-mind-spirit-heart connection has deepened. This commitment enables and enhances the multiple dimensions of learning. Alexian and Ascension promote this dynamic interplay for the benefit of professional and personal growth in ministry. In the 22 year history of CPE at Alexian Village of Milwaukee, over 150 students have graduated from our program and serve ministries near and far.
Alexian Village of Milwaukee has developed extended CPE (Level I and Level II) for persons who cannot make a full-time commitment or for whom part-time CPE aligns with their schedule. The length of the 2020 program will be January 2-16. The typical core model requires eight hours per week in an educational group and 12 hours per week in the clinical setting.

History of the Alexian Brothers
The Alexian Brothers are a religious congregation of Catholic men with an 850 year tradition who trace their roots to the “beghards,” groups of men who banded together, served the sick, poor, and helpless in Germany and the Low Countries.
In the United States the Alexian Brothers sponsored multiple ministries of care in four different Midwest urban centers including Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Chattanooga. They became a participating entity of Ascension in 2012 at which time their healthcare ministries became members of Ascension Health.
Clinical Pastoral Education is an example of the Alexian Brothers’ historic commitment to bring spiritual care and hope to those in need.
